JOURNEYING WITH ETHNIC MINORITY COFFEE FARMERS
by Coffee Duo (Partners)
As we have developed our coffee bean business over the past two years, we have also gradually built deep relationships with the local ethnic minority coffee farmers. Through frequent interactions, we have gained insight into the poverty in which they live; modern amenities and material comforts remain far beyond their reach.
To make a living, these farmers had moved, many years ago, from cliffside villages located in the surrounding mountains to resettlement villages at the foothills. From there, they searched for suitable land in the nearby hillsides to cultivate coffee. They did all this in order to improve their lives, so that the next generation could have enough food and clothing, and a chance to receive an education.
Take for example one of our partners, a farmer in his forties who is already a grandfather. He supports a family of over a dozen people on just over 10 mu (about 0.007 square kilometres) of farmland. Last year, to clear more land for cultivation and primary coffee processing, he raised over RMB 100,000 from relatives and fellow community members, hoping to gradually repay the debt once the harvest comes in two or three years’ time. Despite the demands of his work, this farmer remains dedicated to serving his community by equipping himself and expanding his knowledge and ministry skills.
Deeply moved by their resilience and determination to build a better future, we are committed to walking alongside them, offering mutual support and encouragement through this coffee project.
