In 2009, our family joined MSI, and moved from New York to Chengdu, where I spent the first three years studying Chinese. Because of the serious HIV problem in Zhaojue, the government invited our organisation to partner with them to start an HIV hospital. I started treating HIV patients, regularly teaching them about the disease and how to better care for themselves. We also formed a group of peer counsellors so that HIV patients could reach out to other patients in their community. In 2020, I became the Sichuan provincial chief representative and moved back to Chengdu in 2023. At the beginning of 2025, I took on the role of MSI president.

As I think about the direction of MSI, we are already doing new things, and praying about starting new work in new locations. But what won’t change is our commitment to professional and holistic ministry. In Luke 2:52 we see the young man Jesus growing in wisdom (intellect) and stature (physical growth), in favor with God (relationship with God) and man (relationship with community). These four aspects are the areas we want to focus on while doing holistic ministry.

Secondly, we are all very familiar with the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28. Jesus told his disciples to teach others to obey everything he commanded us. But what did he command? Just a few chapters before, some theologians regard Matthew 25:31-46 as the “Great Compassion,” which forms a key part of Jesus’s teaching. In essence, we are to show compassion to the least of these for their practical, material needs. The grace of God brings healing and restoration to both the spiritual and physical needs of man.

We proclaim and demonstrate the whole gospel through professional service to all segments of society. We minister to the whole person impacting their relationship with God and their community, fostering physical wellbeing, and stimulating intellectual development. This is MSI’s mission.
