To charge or not to charge?

By Florence L

Opening a children’s library is something that has been on my heart for many years. In May of last year, I rented a shop space in one of the small villages on the outskirts of my city and began to make arrangements for “Children’s Learning Greenhouse”. From signing the rental agreement and applying for a business license, to planning renovations, purchasing furniture, books, etc, I saw our heavenly Father’s hand over it all. There were indeed many challenges, but His grace was greater. Children’s Learning Greenhouse”finally opened for business in September of last year. Hallelujah!

In the early days of opening, some children who lived nearby came into the shop to read books. Given the circumstances, it was difficult to require payment from them. However, there were times when even parents avoided payment by pretending that they did not have their phones with them. Opening a store and running a business cannot happen without income, so I was at a loss, and confused over this problem for a long time.

Later, I thought, why not change the store into a charity project? This would not only be more convenient, but also worry-free! I thank God that He reminded me of the original heart of service behind this project: that it was about wanting children to have good book-reading habits. In the end, I decided to let the children continue to come into the store and read books for free. At the same time, I actively promoted activities from which we collected fees. Even though now, as before, income does not cover costs, I truly believe that He will provide and allow this small business to continue to develop.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)
